Akerman Senterfitt’s Jonathan Goodman Appointed United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Florida
July 26, 2010
Akerman Senterfitt today announced that Jonathan Goodman, who until last week was co-chair of the firm’s White Collar Crime and Government Investigations practice, was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Florida.
“We are thrilled for Jonathan and the honor this appointment represents,” said Andrew Smulian, Chairman and CEO of Akerman Senterfitt. “Over the last 17 years, Jonathan has made a significant contribution to the firm and its clients, and we are certain he will bring the same level of dedication to the Federal bench and administration of justice in South Florida.”
A former federal prosecutor, Judge Goodman has extensive experience in criminal and civil cases in federal and state court, arbitration hearings, and administrative proceedings. Earlier, he was a criminal prosecutor and civil trial lawyer with the United States Attorney's Office in Miami. Jonathan has received many accolades for his work in the legal profession, including The Best Lawyers in America 2007-2010, listed in Florida for Commercial Litigation and White-Collar Criminal Defense.
Recently, several Akerman attorneys have taken on significant public offices in service to the citizens of Florida and the nation. Among those, Allan Katz was recently sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Portugal and Thomas Cardwell is now the Commissioner of Florida’s Office of Financial Regulation. Pamela Marsh was also recently sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, the first woman ever to serve the Northern District as the Presidentially-appointed U.S. attorney.
It was announced recently that Judge Gerald B. Cope, Jr., former Chief Judge of Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal and a member of the court for 21 years, will be joining Akerman later this year as a shareholder and co-chair of its Appellate practice. Judge Cope will co-chair Akerman’s Appellate practice with Joseph Hatchett, former Florida Supreme Court Justice and former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. James Joanos, former Chief Judge of Florida’s First District Court of Appeal, is also a key member of the team which handles appellate matters and provides assistance to trial lawyers throughout all phases of litigation.
